Fans familiar with the rules should be advised that in general, the CHL plays under the same rules as most other professional hockey leagues. There are, however, some rules and regulations that vary from league to league. Below is a quick breakdown of some items of particular interest…
Team Rosters
In the CHL, teams are permitted to dress 16 skaters and 2 goalies for each game. The overall roster limit is 19 total players, so one “active” player will be “scratched” for each game. Teams can also designate up to 3 players for the 10-day Injured Reserve list and another 2 players for the 30-day IR list, and can place an unlimited number of players on season-ending Injured Reserve. Each team can roster a maximum of 6 veterans, with “veteran” being defined as any player with 301 or more career professional games.
Icing
Unlike the NHL, the CHL uses “no-touch” or “automatic” icing. As soon as the puck crosses the goal line, the whistle is blown and play is stopped. (The opposition is not required to touch the puck after it has crossed the goal line.) However, the CHL does match the NHL in prohibiting a team from making player substitutions during the stoppage of play that results from having Iced the puck.
Instigating a Fight
The “Instigator” penalty is used in the CHL, although it does not result in an automatic ejection. A player’s first Instigator in a given game carries a Minor penalty with a Misconduct. If the player earns a second Instigator in the same game, he is then given a Minor with a Game Misconduct.
Delay of Game
Unlike the NHL, the CHL does not automatically assess a Delay Of Game penalty to any player who shoots the puck out of play from his defensive zone. Doing so intentionally (from anywhere on the ice) is still penalized, and goaltenders are still penalized for shooting the puck directly out of play, even if accidentally.
The Trapezoid
The CHL does echo the NHL in employing the “Trapezoid” rule with regard to goaltenders playing the puck. Goalies can play the puck in front of the goal line, or anywhere within the trapezoid behind the goal line. However, playing the puck behind the goal line and outside the trapezoid area (in the corners) is prohibited, and results in a Minor penalty.
Two-Line Passes
The “Two-Line Pass” rule is no longer enforced in the CHL. Passes from one’s defensive zone to a teammate past the center red line are permitted. Offside Passes, of course, are still prohibited.
Face Protection
In the CHL, all skaters are required to wear a half-shield (or “visor”), which is to be attached to their helmet.
